What SAT Score Do You Need for UF? The 2026-27 Cycle

Updated August 2026 by Carson Flowers.

The short answer: admitted University of Florida students in the 2026 cycle posted a middle 50% SAT of 1420 to 1520. Treat 1470 or higher as the working target. Below 1420, the rest of the application has to carry unusual weight.

How to close the gap

The current data card for UF, restamped whenever we re-verify the numbers, lives on our University of Florida page. This guide is about the 2026-27 cycle: how the range has moved, when to test, and how to close the gap.

  • Middle 50% SAT (admitted): 1420 to 1520

Five years ago, UF was a safety school for strong Florida students. It is not anymore. Four out of five applicants are turned away, and almost half of all SAT takers nationally carry an A average, which is precisely why UF leans on the one number that cannot be inflated.

Is the UF range still climbing?

Yes. UF's admitted middle 50% moved from 1380 to 1510 in the 2025 cycle to 1420 to 1520 in the 2026 cycle, a 40-point jump at the floor in a single year. A score that was competitive for last year's class sits below the range for this one. Families planning around an older number are planning around a school that no longer exists, which is why we anchor every UF plan to the newest published profile.

Does UF require the SAT?

Yes. Florida's public universities never went test-optional. All twelve State University System schools require an SAT, ACT, or CLT score by Board of Governors regulation. A Florida student without a test score has no application.

What the middle 50% means for your teen

A 1420 does not mean rejection and a 1520 does not mean admission. It means 25% of admitted students scored below 1420 and 25% above 1520. Practically: at 1470 or higher, the score helps the application. Between 1420 and 1460, it is neutral and essays, rigor, and GPA decide. Below 1420, the score is a headwind.

The misconception: there is time to test senior year

Many families plan to finish testing in the fall of senior year, because UF's application deadlines allow it. The money does not. Bright Futures only counts tests taken by August 31 of the graduation year, so the scholarship clock runs out before the admissions clock does. A senior who waits for fall test dates can still apply to UF and still lose the tuition award in the same season. Plan the calendar around the earlier deadline and both stay open.

The 2026-27 testing calendar for a UF-bound student

A junior aiming at UF for Fall 2027 should plan a first sitting in spring of junior year and a retake in August or the fall. The first test shows exactly which sections are costing points, and UF-range scores are almost always built across two sittings. Current dates are on our Florida SAT test dates page.

The Bright Futures connection most families miss

The path to a UF-range score runs directly through the Bright Futures FAS threshold of 1330. A student who trains to 1330 has already banked 100% of tuition, about $25,500 across a degree, and stands 90 points from UF's 1420 floor. That last stretch is real work, but it is a known climb with the money already handled. We build prep plans around exactly that staircase: 1190, then 1330, then the target school's range.

Heads up for younger students: for the class of 2028 and later, the state raises the lines to 1350 for Academic Scholars and 1200 for Medallion (ACT 25 for Medallion, CLT 96/83). Full breakdown in our handbook walkthrough.

Quick answers

Is a 1400 good enough for UF?

A 1400 now sits below UF's 1420 floor, which makes the score a headwind rather than a help. A quarter of admits do score below the floor, so it is not a rejection, but the rest of the file has to carry the case. For most students a 1400 is one focused prep block from the range itself.

Can a strong essay offset a below-1420 score at UF?

Inside the neutral band of 1420 to 1460, essays, rigor, and GPA genuinely decide. Below the floor, the essay is arguing uphill against the one number UF can compare across every applicant on the same scale. The reliable move is raising the score, not polishing the prose.

Does UF superscore the SAT?

Yes. UF combines your teen's best section scores across SAT dates, per its own admissions guidance. Bright Futures superscores the same way, best Reading and Writing plus best Math across sittings, so a well-planned retake raises both numbers at once.

When should my teen take the SAT for a Fall 2027 UF application?

First sitting in spring of junior year, retake in late summer or fall. The August 31 Bright Futures cutoff makes early testing the safe plan, and UF-range scores are usually built across two sittings.

How to close the gap

UF-range scores are built, not wished for: a diagnostic to find the questions costing points, targeted section work, and full-length rehearsal tests before the real thing, the Map, Master, Mock system we run for Florida students. Our students average a +172-point improvement.
