Built up the coast, and Florida is all we do

Carson Flowers founded Florida Test Prep after going through this exact process himself at Plant High School. No college fund, a first SAT of 1050, and a system he built to fix it. By senior year he scored a 1430. That number earned $30,000 in Bright Futures, a spot in FSU Honors, a very selective Presidential Scholarship, and $81,000 in scholarships in total.

Our College Admissions Partner, Lesley Morter, spent 30 years as a professional school counselor, the last eight of them serving IB students and their families at Hillsborough High School and Robinson High School in Tampa, about an hour up the coast. She received the Yale Educator Award in 2023. She knows how a Florida county counseling office actually works, because she ran one.

National test prep companies assign you a tutor in another time zone who has never heard of Bright Futures. That is the difference.

What Sarasota students are actually competing against

Sarasota is one of the eighteen Florida counties sending more than 500 students to FSU. USF is an hour north and New College is in town. Here is what the bigger names actually admit.

Notice the overlap. The Bright Futures Florida Academic Scholars score of 1330 sits inside USF's range and UCF's range, and fifty points below FSU's floor. One training target, several doors.

Sarasota posts a 1181 average. Read the second column before you celebrate.

Sarasota County's average SAT is 1181, which is 186 points above the Florida average of 995 and one of the highest in the state. Then look at how many students that average is describing. 1,277 of 3,334 graduates took the SAT. That is 38 percent, against 80 percent statewide. Eighty-seven percent of Sarasota graduates took the ACT instead.

Sarasota is an ACT county, and its SAT average is calculated on the roughly one third of students who chose to sit the SAT anyway. Those students skew heavily college-bound. The county number is real, but it is not describing your teen's graduating class. The participation column below is the one that tells you how much weight each average can carry.

Pine View is doing something no other public school in Florida is doing

We have now pulled school-level SAT data for ten Florida counties, covering Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Tallahassee, St. Petersburg, Clearwater and Gainesville. Pine View is the only public high school in any of them averaging above the 100 percent Bright Futures line of 1330. It averages 1406, with 84 percent of its graduates testing, which means that number is not a small-sample artifact.

Pine View is a countywide gifted school with selective admission, so it is not a fair comparison to a zoned high school and we are not pretending otherwise. It is useful as a ceiling. It shows what a Florida public school population looks like when nearly everyone in it is prepared and testing.

Now the honest read for everyone else in the county. Below Pine View, Riverview and Suncoast Polytechnical clear the 75 percent line of 1190 on about half their graduates. Sarasota High, Venice and North Port sit in the 1110s to 1150s on a quarter to two fifths of their students, so the real all-class figures are lower than they look. Booker averages 991 on 17 percent.

A Sarasota family who reads the county's 1181 and assumes their teen is fine is making a mistake the data invites. The number to compare your teen against is not the county average. It is 1190, 1330, and whatever UF, FSU or USF requires.

Sarasota sends far more students to FSU than its size suggests

FSU publishes every high school that sent it 26 or more freshmen, 55 schools nationally. Four of them are in Sarasota County, a county that graduates 3,334 students a year.

Put that next to Miami-Dade. Miami-Dade graduates 23,831 students a year and has six schools on FSU's list. Sarasota graduates 3,334 and has four. A county with one seventh the graduating class has two thirds as many schools clearing the same bar.

Sarasota is genuinely a strong college-going county, and Riverview at 49 sends more FSU freshmen than any school in Miami-Dade. That is a real thing to be proud of and a real reason not to be complacent, because it also means your teen's competition for a Florida state university seat is sitting in the same classrooms.

And it is worth noticing which schools these are. Riverview, Sarasota High and Venice are ordinary zoned public high schools, not the gifted magnet. Pine View sends 48 and the other three send 123 between them. Most Sarasota students going to FSU are not coming from Pine View.

Up the coast, where the SAT is the default

Sarasota is an ACT county. An hour north, that flips completely, and the county averages you can compare yourself against change with it.

Bright Futures is a Sarasota parent's biggest lever

Every Florida student is eligible for the same award, regardless of what a family earns. That is worth saying in Sarasota, because the assumption that a scholarship is need-based costs families here real money every year. Bright Futures is not need-based. It is a score and a GPA. By the time a parent calls us the GPA is usually handled, and the score is the piece still in play.

• 1190 earns Florida Medallion Scholars, roughly 75% of tuition, worth about $22,000
• 1330 earns Florida Academic Scholars, 100% of tuition, worth about $30,000
• Scores must come from a test taken by August 31 of your teen's graduation year, which ends senior-year testing earlier than most families expect

That 140-point gap between the two tiers is worth about $8,000. It is the highest-return studying your teen will do this year.

Do you have a location in Sarasota?

No, and that is deliberate. We coach online, which means your teen works with the strongest strategist for their situation rather than whoever staffs the nearest storefront. The company is Florida-based and works with Florida families only.

Does USF require the SAT?

Yes. Florida never adopted test-optional admissions. Every school in the State University System, USF and New College included, requires an SAT, ACT or CLT score. A Florida student without a test score does not have a complete application anywhere in the system.

When should a Sarasota student start?

Sophomores should take a baseline diagnostic now and sit their first official test late sophomore or early junior year. Juniors should test in the fall and retake in March. Seniors should count backward from the August 31 Bright Futures cutoff, because there are fewer dates left than it looks.

What does it cost?
