Carson Flowers founded Florida Test Prep after going through this exact process himself at Plant High School. No college fund, a first SAT of 1050, and a system he built to fix it. By senior year he scored a 1430. That number earned $30,000 in Bright Futures, a spot in FSU Honors, a very selective Presidential Scholarship, and $81,000 in scholarships in total.

National test prep companies assign you a tutor in another time zone who has never heard of Bright Futures. That is the difference.

What Tallahassee students are actually competing against

Growing up in Tallahassee means growing up around FSU, and that familiarity works against families. Living twenty minutes from campus does not make admission easier. Here is what FSU and the rest of the state universities actually admit.

Notice the overlap. The Bright Futures Florida Academic Scholars score of 1330 sits inside USF's range and UCF's range, and fifty points below FSU's floor. One training target, several doors.

How Tallahassee high schools actually score

Leon County graduated 1,987 students in the class of 2025. 1,717 took the SAT and averaged 1033. That is 38 points above the Florida average of 995, and Leon is genuinely one of the stronger districts in the state. Now here is the part that matters if your teen wants FSU.

FSU admits a middle range of roughly 1380 to 1480. Lawton Chiles is the highest scoring public high school in Tallahassee at 1123. That is 257 points below the bottom of FSU's admitted range, at the best public school in the city that FSU is located in.

Not one Leon County high school averages at the 75 percent Bright Futures line of 1190 either. Chiles is 67 points short of it. Lincoln and Leon High are around 150 short. Growing up in the shadow of the stadium does not move a score, and Leon County's own numbers say so plainly.

The county average has been falling, and the reason is not what it looks like

Leon averaged 1066 in 2021-22 and 1033 in 2024-25, a drop of 33 points. Over the same period the share of graduates taking the SAT rose from 66 percent to 86 percent. When a district goes from testing two thirds of its class to testing nearly all of it, the students added are usually the ones who were not planning on it, and the average falls even if nothing about the teaching changed. Florida statewide shows the same pattern, down 25 points over the same four years.

The useful read is not that Tallahassee schools got worse. It is that the average now includes almost everyone, so it describes the unprepared case better than it ever did. Which is exactly why it is a poor predictor of what your teen scores with a plan.

Leon County gives your junior a free SAT, and most families find out too late

Florida requires every eleventh grader to take a college entrance exam, and each district chooses whether that is the ACT, the SAT or the CLT. Leon County has chosen the SAT. The district's own uniform assessment calendar schedules it during the school day in a March to April window, free, for every junior in the county.

That is a genuinely good thing and it is also where a lot of Tallahassee scores get set badly. The exam is real. The score is real, it goes on the record, and it can be sent to FSU. But for most students it lands in the spring of junior year having done nothing to prepare for it, because nobody framed it as a test that counts. It gets treated like a school day interruption rather than the first official SAT of a student's life.

The fix is boring and it works. Sit a real SAT in the fall of junior year, on a Saturday, on purpose. Then the March school day exam becomes a second attempt with a known baseline behind it, rather than a cold first impression. Same free test, completely different outcome, and it costs a family nothing extra.

Leon County is FSU's largest source of students, by a mile

4,750 FSU students come from Leon County. That is more than Miami-Dade, more than Broward, more than any county in Florida. Tallahassee is not competing for FSU from the outside. It is the inside.

That concentration cuts both ways, and this is the part worth sitting with. FSU is the realistic destination for a large share of Tallahassee students, which means the FSU bar is the bar. There is no comfortable fallback plan built into the geography here. Only 591 Leon students are at UF, and of the 213 Leon students UCF accepted, just 45 enrolled, the lowest yield of any major county in the state. Tallahassee families overwhelmingly want to stay in Tallahassee.

And only two local high schools clear FSU's reporting threshold

FSU publishes the high schools that sent it 26 or more freshmen. From all of Leon County there are exactly two: Lawton Chiles 65 and Leon High 26.

Chiles sends as many freshmen to FSU as H.B. Plant in Tampa, and it is the highest scoring public high school in the county at 1123. Leon High, at 1032, sends 26. Lincoln, Rickards, SAIL and Godby do not appear on the list at all. In the city where FSU is located, two public high schools are meaningfully feeding it.

If your teen is at one of the other four, that is not a verdict. It is a gap that a score closes, and the score is the only part of this that is genuinely in your family's control.

Bright Futures is a Tallahassee parent's biggest lever

Leon County does better than most of Florida on the SAT and it is still not close to the award. The county averages 1033 against a 75 percent line of 1190. For a family planning on FSU or FAMU, where in-state tuition is the whole financial model, that gap is the difference between a manageable four years and a loan. By the time a parent calls us, the GPA and the service hours are usually handled. The score is the piece still in play.

• 1190 earns Florida Medallion Scholars, roughly 75% of tuition, worth about $22,000
• 1330 earns Florida Academic Scholars, 100% of tuition, worth about $30,000
• Scores must come from a test taken by August 31 of your teen's graduation year, which ends senior-year testing earlier than most families expect

That 140-point gap between the two tiers is worth about $8,000. It is the highest-return studying your teen will do this year.

Do you have a location in Tallahassee?

No, and in Tallahassee that is an advantage rather than a compromise. The local tutoring market is small and leans heavily on FSU undergraduates who tutored a subject, not the exam. Coaching online means your teen works with a strategist who does this full time and knows the Bright Futures cutoffs cold.

Does FSU require the SAT?

Yes. Florida never adopted test-optional admissions. Every school in the State University System, FSU and FAMU included, requires an SAT, ACT or CLT score. A Florida student without a test score does not have a complete application, no matter how close they live to campus.

When should a Tallahassee student start?

Earlier than most Tallahassee families expect, and Leon County's own testing calendar is the reason. The district gives every eleventh grader the SAT free during the school day, in a March to April window. That is a real score on the record, and for most students it arrives before they have done any preparation at all. Testing in the fall first turns the school day exam into a second attempt rather than a first impression.
