Carson Flowers founded Florida Test Prep after going through this exact process himself at Plant High School. No college fund, a first SAT of 1050, and a system he built to fix it. By senior year he scored a 1430. That number earned $30,000 in Bright Futures, a spot in FSU Honors, a very selective Presidential Scholarship, and $81,000 in scholarships in total.

National test prep companies assign you a tutor in another time zone who has never heard of Bright Futures. That is the difference.

What Jacksonville students are actually competing against

UNF is the hometown option, but most Jacksonville families are also applying to UF, FSU and UCF, and those three are where the score does the heavy lifting. Here is what they actually admit.

Notice the overlap. The Bright Futures Florida Academic Scholars score of 1330 sits inside UCF's admitted range and fifty points below FSU's floor. One training target, several doors.

How Jacksonville high schools actually score

Duval County Public Schools graduated 8,053 students in the class of 2025. 6,113 of them took the SAT and averaged 980. The Florida statewide average was 995, so Duval sits just under the state. The number underneath that one matters more: 1,940 Duval graduates finished high school without an SAT score at all. Florida has no test-optional public university, so those students did not have a complete application to a single one of them.

Here is the county school by school. The third column is the share of each school's graduates who actually sat the test, and it is worth reading alongside the average, because a school where fewer students test will usually post a higher number.

Look at the top of that table before you look at the bottom. Stanton College Preparatory is the highest scoring public high school in Duval County, it is a selective magnet, 99 percent of its graduates test, and it averages 1319. The 100 percent Bright Futures line is 1330. Even Stanton lands 11 points short of it.

That is the honest picture in Jacksonville. Getting into the best public school in the county does not get your teen the full award. Preparing for the test does.

The widest county gap in Florida runs right through Jacksonville

Northeast Florida is four school districts, and the distance between the top and the bottom is 204 points. That is the largest metro spread we have measured anywhere in the state.

One caveat, because the gap is not as clean as it looks. St. Johns tests only 51 percent of its graduates while Duval tests 76 percent. When fewer students sit the exam, the ones who do are usually the college bound half, and the average rises accordingly. So some of that 204 point gap is who is taking the test, not only how they scored. Anyone selling you a simple St. Johns versus Duval story is skipping that.

What is not distorted is the distance to the money. St. Johns, the strongest district in Northeast Florida, still averages 6 points below the 75 percent Bright Futures line and 146 points below the full award. Duval averages 350 points below the full award. Nassau and Clay sit in between, both more than 300 short.

Your teen is not a district average. But the district average tells you what happens when nobody prepares, and in this metro that is most people.

Where Jacksonville students actually end up

Concrete numbers for Duval County, from the universities' own enrollment reporting.

Duval is the seventh largest county of origin at FSU. Roughly 3,500 Jacksonville students are at UF and FSU right now. UF is 74 miles down the road, the closest of the big three to Jacksonville by a wide margin.

Which Jacksonville high schools send the most students to FSU

FSU publishes the high schools that sent it 26 or more freshmen. Four are in the Jacksonville area: Fleming Island 36, Bishop Kenny 35, Stanton College Prep 28, Duncan U. Fletcher 27.

Two of those four are private, and the two public ones, Stanton and Fletcher, are the first and fifth highest scoring public high schools in Duval County at 1319 and 1066. Out of 28 public high schools in Duval, exactly two clear FSU's publication threshold. That is the honest shape of the Jacksonville pipeline, and it is a preparation gap rather than a talent gap.

Bright Futures is a Jacksonville parent's biggest lever

Every Florida student is eligible for the same award. What makes Jacksonville different is how wide the range is inside one metro. Duval averages 980 and St. Johns averages 1184, and the award does not care which side of the county line your teen sleeps on. By the time a parent calls us, the GPA and the service hours are usually already handled. The score is the piece still in play, and it is the piece worth the most money.

• 1190 earns Florida Medallion Scholars, roughly 75% of tuition, worth about $22,000
• 1330 earns Florida Academic Scholars, 100% of tuition, worth about $30,000
• Scores must come from a test taken by August 31 of your teen's graduation year, which ends senior-year testing earlier than most families expect

That 140-point gap between the two tiers is worth about $8,000. It is the highest-return studying your teen will do this year.

Questions Jacksonville parents ask

Do you have a location in Jacksonville?

No, and that is deliberate. We coach online, which means your teen works with the strongest strategist for their situation rather than whoever staffs the nearest storefront, and it means nobody is crossing the Buckman at 6pm. The company is Florida-based and works with Florida families only.

Does UNF require the SAT?

Yes. Florida never adopted test-optional admissions. Every school in the State University System, UNF included, requires an SAT, ACT or CLT score. A Florida student without a test score does not have a complete application, which matters more in Duval than almost anywhere else in the state.

When should a Jacksonville student start?

Earlier than most Jacksonville families think, and the reason is local. Nearly a quarter of Duval graduates leave high school with no SAT score at all, which usually is not a decision anyone made on purpose. It is what happens when the only sitting a student gets is the one the district schedules, and something goes wrong that day. Sophomores should take a baseline diagnostic now and sit a real test late sophomore or early junior year. Juniors should test in the fall so the spring school day exam becomes a second attempt rather than a first impression. Seniors should count backward from the August 31 Bright Futures cutoff, because there are fewer usable dates left than it looks.
