Carson Flowers founded Florida Test Prep after going through this exact process himself at Plant High School. No college fund, a first SAT of 1050, and a system he built to fix it. By senior year he scored a 1430. That number earned $30,000 in Bright Futures, a spot in FSU Honors, a very selective Presidential Scholarship, and $81,000 in scholarships in total.

National test prep companies assign you a tutor in another time zone who has never heard of Bright Futures. That is the difference.

What Miami students are actually competing against

Miami-Dade sends more freshmen to FSU than any county except Leon, and it is one of the two largest counties at UF. These are not reach schools for Miami families. Here is what they actually admit.

Notice the overlap. The Bright Futures Florida Academic Scholars score of 1330 sits inside USF's range and UCF's range, and fifty points below FSU's floor. One training target, several doors.

How Tampa high schools actually score

Hillsborough County graduated 15,350 students in the class of 2025. 13,466 of them took the SAT, which is 88 percent, and they averaged 994. The Florida average was 995, so Hillsborough sits almost exactly on the state line. Here is what that looks like school by school.

Plant High School is the highest scoring public high school in Hillsborough County at 1158, and that number is personal here. Carson graduated from Plant. His first SAT was a 1050, which is 108 points below what his own school averages. He finished at 1430, which is 272 points above it. The distance between those two numbers is the reason this company exists.

It also makes the wider point better than any argument could. Plant is the strongest public high school in the county and it still averages 172 points below the 100 percent Bright Futures line of 1330. In fact not one public high school in Hillsborough County reaches even the 75 percent line of 1190. Plant comes closest and is 32 points short of it.

Your teen's zoned school sets the starting conditions. It does not decide the score, and in Carson's case it was not even close.

Where Tampa students actually end up

Most test prep sites talk about UF and FSU in the abstract. Here is the concrete version for Hillsborough County, from the universities' own enrollment reporting.

Hillsborough is the fourth largest county of origin at FSU, behind only Leon, Miami-Dade and Broward. Over six thousand Tampa students are at UF and FSU right now. This is a well-worn path, not a long shot.

Which Tampa high schools send the most students to FSU

FSU publishes the high schools that sent it 26 or more freshmen. Five are in the Tampa area:

Notice which schools those are. Plant, Newsome and Steinbrenner are three of the four highest scoring public high schools in Hillsborough County. The schools that send the most students to FSU are the same schools with the highest SAT averages. That is not a coincidence and it is not about the buildings. It is about how many students in the building arrived at the test prepared.

If your teen is not at one of those five schools, nothing on this page says they cannot get there. It says the score is the thing standing between them and it, and the score is the part you can actually change.

How Miami high schools actually score

Miami-Dade is the largest school district in Florida. It graduated 23,831 students in the class of 2025, and 21,740 of them took the SAT, a participation rate of 91 percent, one of the highest in the state. The average was 991, just under the Florida average of 995.

That combination matters. Miami-Dade tests nearly everybody, so its average is an honest picture of the whole class rather than a filtered one. Here are the schools with the strongest results.

Not one public high school in Miami-Dade averages at the 100 percent Bright Futures line of 1330. TERRA, the strongest in the county, is 68 points short. Only TERRA and MAST clear even the 75 percent line of 1190, and both are selective magnets. Doral Academy misses that line by nine points.

Miami-Dade does the hard part already. It gets 91 percent of its graduates to sit the exam, well above the state. What it does not do, because no district does, is prepare them for it. That is the whole gap, and it is the only thing we work on.

Miami-Dade sends more freshmen to FSU than any county in Florida

This surprises people, including people in Miami. 648 Miami-Dade students entered FSU as freshmen in fall 2025, more than any other county in the state, including Leon. Miami-Dade is also the second largest county of origin for FSU's total enrollment at 3,465 students, and the second largest at UF with 5,117.

Nearly nine thousand Miami-Dade students are at UF and FSU right now. Whatever a family in Kendall or Doral may assume about those schools being for somebody else, the enrollment files disagree in volume.

That volume is exactly why the score matters more here, not less. When 648 students from one county enter a single university in one year, the admissions office is not reading each application as a novelty. It is sorting a large, familiar pool, and the score is the fastest sorting mechanism it has. A Miami student is competing hardest against other Miami students.

The six Miami high schools FSU names by name

FSU publishes every high school that sent it 26 or more freshmen. Fifty-five schools clear that bar nationally. Six of them are in Miami-Dade.

Read those two columns side by side, because they do not move together. TERRA has the highest SAT average in Miami-Dade at 1262 and sends 37 freshmen. Miami Palmetto averages 1050, over two hundred points lower, and sends 32. Coral Reef sends the most of any Miami school at 42, on an average of 1141.

The reason is size. Palmetto and Coral Reef graduate 666 students each. TERRA graduates 373 and MAST 246. A large school with an average score sends about as many students to FSU as a small selective one with a great score.

Which is the useful thing for a Miami parent to know. Getting into a magnet is not the only route, and not getting into one is not a closed door. Palmetto sends 32 students a year to FSU on a 1050 school average, which means those particular 32 were well above it.

Bright Futures is a Miami parent's biggest lever

Every Florida student is eligible for the same award, and in Miami-Dade the scale of the gap is what stands out. The district graduates almost 24,000 students a year and averages 991 against a 75 percent line of 1190. That is tens of thousands of families each year for whom the scholarship is a real possibility and a real miss. By the time a parent calls us, the GPA and the service hours are usually handled. The score is the piece still in play.

• 1190 earns Florida Medallion Scholars, roughly 75% of tuition, worth about $22,000
• 1330 earns Florida Academic Scholars, 100% of tuition, worth about $30,000
• Scores must come from a test taken by August 31 of your teen's graduation year, which ends senior-year testing earlier than most families expect

That 140-point gap between the two tiers is worth about $8,000. It is the highest-return studying your teen will do this year.

Questions Miami parents ask

Do you have a location in Miami?

No, and that is deliberate. We coach online, which means your teen works with the strongest strategist for their situation rather than whoever staffs the nearest storefront. The company is Florida-based and works with Florida families only.

Does FIU require the SAT?

Yes. Florida never adopted test-optional admissions. Every school in the State University System, FIU and FAU included, requires an SAT, ACT or CLT score. A Florida student without a test score does not have a complete application anywhere in the system.

When should a Miami student start?

Sophomores should take a baseline diagnostic now and sit their first official test late sophomore or early junior year. Juniors should test in the fall and retake in March. Seniors should count backward from the August 31 Bright Futures cutoff, because there are fewer dates left than it looks.

What does it cost?
