Carson Flowers founded Florida Test Prep after going through this exact process himself at Plant High School. No college fund, a first SAT of 1050, and a system he built to fix it. By senior year he scored a 1430. That number earned $30,000 in Bright Futures, a spot in FSU Honors, a very selective Presidential Scholarship, and $81,000 in scholarships in total.

National test prep companies assign you a tutor in another time zone who has never heard of Bright Futures. That is the difference.

What Fort Lauderdale students are actually competing against

Broward is the third largest county of origin at FSU and one of the largest at UF. Plenty of Broward students make it. Here is the range they have to land in.

Notice the overlap. The Bright Futures Florida Academic Scholars score of 1330 sits inside USF's range and UCF's range, and fifty points below FSU's floor. One training target, several doors.

How Tampa high schools actually score

Hillsborough County graduated 15,350 students in the class of 2025. 13,466 of them took the SAT, which is 88 percent, and they averaged 994. The Florida average was 995, so Hillsborough sits almost exactly on the state line. Here is what that looks like school by school.

Plant High School is the highest scoring public high school in Hillsborough County at 1158, and that number is personal here. Carson graduated from Plant. His first SAT was a 1050, which is 108 points below what his own school averages. He finished at 1430, which is 272 points above it. The distance between those two numbers is the reason this company exists.

It also makes the wider point better than any argument could. Plant is the strongest public high school in the county and it still averages 172 points below the 100 percent Bright Futures line of 1330. In fact not one public high school in Hillsborough County reaches even the 75 percent line of 1190. Plant comes closest and is 32 points short of it.

Your teen's zoned school sets the starting conditions. It does not decide the score, and in Carson's case it was not even close.

Where Tampa students actually end up

Most test prep sites talk about UF and FSU in the abstract. Here is the concrete version for Hillsborough County, from the universities' own enrollment reporting.

Hillsborough is the fourth largest county of origin at FSU, behind only Leon, Miami-Dade and Broward. Over six thousand Tampa students are at UF and FSU right now. This is a well-worn path, not a long shot.

Which Tampa high schools send the most students to FSU

FSU publishes the high schools that sent it 26 or more freshmen. Five are in the Tampa area:

Notice which schools those are. Plant, Newsome and Steinbrenner are three of the four highest scoring public high schools in Hillsborough County. The schools that send the most students to FSU are the same schools with the highest SAT averages. That is not a coincidence and it is not about the buildings. It is about how many students in the building arrived at the test prepared.

If your teen is not at one of those five schools, nothing on this page says they cannot get there. It says the score is the thing standing between them and it, and the score is the part you can actually change.

How Broward County high schools actually score

Broward graduated 17,711 students in the class of 2025. 16,023 took the SAT, a participation rate of 90 percent, and the average was 1000. That puts Broward just above the Florida average of 995, and it is one of the few very large districts in the state that clears it.

Look at the top row and then look at 1330. College Academy at Broward College, a dual enrollment school where 100 percent of graduates test, averages 1309. The full Bright Futures award starts at 1330. The single highest scoring public school in Broward County misses it by 21 points.

Twenty-one points is one or two questions. It is also, at that school, the difference between a full tuition scholarship and a 75 percent one for the average student in the building. Nothing else on this page makes the case for preparing better than that number does.

Below the top two, the gap widens fast. Cypress Bay at 1181 misses the 75 percent line by nine points. Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Cooper City, Fort Lauderdale High and Western are all in the 1030s to 1120s, which is 70 to 160 points from that line.

Broward sends more students to UF than any county in Florida

Not Alachua, where UF actually sits. Not Orange, not Hillsborough, not Miami-Dade. Broward County, with 5,197 students enrolled at the University of Florida in fall 2025, is the single largest county of origin at UF.

That is the part worth holding onto. A Broward family looking at UF is not looking at a long shot from an unfamiliar place. They are looking at the school their county sends more students to than anyone else's.

And it is exactly why the number in the table above stings. UF admits a middle 50 percent of 1330 to 1490. Broward's county average is 1000, and the single highest scoring public school in the county, College Academy at Broward College, averages 1309, which is 21 points under UF's 25th percentile as well as under the full Bright Futures line.

Thousands of Broward students clear that bar every year. They are not doing it because of where they live. They are doing it because at some point somebody sat down and prepared for the test.

The number one FSU feeder high school in Florida is in Weston

FSU publishes every high school in the country that sent it 26 or more freshmen. Fifty-five schools clear that bar. The one at the top of the list is Cypress Bay in Weston, with 84. Not a Tallahassee school. Not a Tampa school. A Broward County public high school.

Six Broward schools clear FSU's threshold, sending 276 freshmen between them. That is more than any county in the state, which fits with Broward also being the largest county of origin at UF.

Now look at Cypress Bay and Pompano Beach next to the score table above. Cypress Bay averages 1181 and sends 84 students to FSU. Pompano Beach averages 1232, higher, and sends 31. Cypress Bay is simply much larger, graduating 1,236 students against Pompano's 310.

That is worth understanding rather than glossing over. Volume and average are different things. A big school with a solid average sends more students than a small school with a great one. What neither number tells you is what your individual teen will score, and that is the only number your family is actually deciding with.

South Florida's other counties

Broward leads Florida at UF. Miami-Dade leads it at FSU. Between them they are the engine of Florida's state university system, and their numbers are not the same.

Bright Futures is a Broward parent's biggest lever

Every Florida student is eligible for the same award. Broward at 1000 is one of the few large districts sitting above the state average, and it is still 190 points from the 75 percent line and 330 from the full one. By the time a parent calls us, the GPA and the service hours are usually handled. The score is the piece still in play, and it is the piece worth the most money.

• 1190 earns Florida Medallion Scholars, roughly 75% of tuition, worth about $22,000
• 1330 earns Florida Academic Scholars, 100% of tuition, worth about $30,000
• Scores must come from a test taken by August 31 of your teen's graduation year, which ends senior-year testing earlier than most families expect

That 140-point gap between the two tiers is worth about $8,000. It is the highest-return studying your teen will do this year.

Do you have a location in Fort Lauderdale?

No, and that is deliberate. We coach online, which means your teen works with the strongest strategist for their situation rather than whoever staffs the nearest storefront. The company is Florida-based and works with Florida families only.

Does FAU require the SAT?

Yes. Florida never adopted test-optional admissions. Every school in the State University System, FAU and FIU included, requires an SAT, ACT or CLT score. A Florida student without a test score does not have a complete application anywhere in the system.

When should a Broward student start?

Sophomores should take a baseline diagnostic now and sit their first official test late sophomore or early junior year. Juniors should test in the fall and retake in March. Seniors should count backward from the August 31 Bright Futures cutoff, because there are fewer dates left than it looks.
