What SAT Score Do You Need for FSU? The 2026-27 Cycle

The short answer: Florida State's admitted class for Fall 2026 posted a middle 50% SAT of 1380 to 1480. Aim for 1430 or higher to be comfortably competitive. Below 1380, admission is an uphill case.

The real numbers

One methodology note: these are FSU's admitted-student figures, which is the right set for a "what score do I need" question. FSU also publishes enrolled-class numbers, which run a little lower (1350 to 1430 for Fall 2025), so if you see two different FSU ranges online, that is usually why.

The misconception: FSU is the backup school

A generation of Florida parents remembers FSU as the school you fell back on. That mental model is now the single most expensive assumption a family can bring to this process. With 86,000+ applications for roughly 6,200 seats, FSU turns away the overwhelming majority, including thousands of students with excellent grades. Almost every serious file carries a high GPA, so the grades stop separating anyone. What separates admits is the score. And the bar is moving: FSU's admitted middle 50% went from 1340 to 1450 in the 2025 cycle to 1380 to 1480 in the 2026 cycle, a 40-point rise at the floor in one year.

The one-score, two-doors overlap

Here is the arithmetic every Florida family should see: the Bright Futures FAS threshold is 1330, and FSU's admitted range now starts at 1380. Fifty points apart. A student who trains to the FAS score has 100% of tuition banked and one focused prep block between them and FSU's floor. The 1330 is still the most valuable single number in Florida admissions; what changed this cycle is that it is now the base camp for FSU, not the doorstep. Plan the extra 50 points into the calendar from the start.

Does FSU require the SAT?

Yes. Like every Florida public university, FSU requires an SAT, ACT, or CLT score. Florida never adopted test-optional admissions.

The 2026-27 testing calendar for an FSU-bound student

A junior aiming at FSU for Fall 2027 should plan a first sitting in spring of junior year and a retake in August or the fall. With a range moving this fast, the plan needs margin: two sittings, with the first one early enough that the retake still lands before applications go in. One deadline outranks the rest: Bright Futures only counts tests taken by August 31 of the graduation year, earlier than FSU's application deadlines, so the money clock runs out before the admissions clock. Is 1380 enough for FSU, or is it the floor?

A 1380 sits exactly at the bottom of FSU's admitted middle 50%, so it keeps a student in the conversation without separating them. A quarter of admits scored below it, but they needed the rest of the file to carry the case. Treat 1430 or higher as the comfortable target.

What happens to FSU applicants with great grades and no score?

There is no FSU application without a test score. Florida's public universities require an SAT, ACT, or CLT result from every applicant, so strong grades alone never reach the review. The score is not a tiebreaker at the end of the file. It is the ticket in.

Does the SAT superscore for FSU and Bright Futures?

Bright Futures superscores by rule: the state combines your teen's best Reading and Writing score with their best Math score across every sitting. That alone makes a planned retake worth it. FSU's own treatment of multiple scores can change by cycle, so confirm its current policy with FSU Admissions before deciding how many sittings to send.

When should my teen take the SAT for a Fall 2027 FSU application?

First sitting in spring of junior year, retake in late summer or fall. The August 31 Bright Futures cutoff makes early testing the safe plan, and a 40-point-per-year range means waiting costs more here than almost anywhere.
