What SAT score does the University of South Carolina expect?
Carson's benchmark is 1300 and up, because the average score USC accepts probably sits in the 1280s, just under 1300. That is the University of South Carolina in Columbia, home of the Gamecocks, which shares the USC initials with a very different school in Los Angeles. Make sure the numbers you read online belong to the right one.
A score near the average means the SAT is unlikely to be the reason your teen gets in or turned away. That is the point of aiming a little above it. In Carson's words, the goal is to apply without the SAT being "the reason they get accepted or rejected."
The SAT is one part of the file, and USC says so plainly. Its admissions page states that freshman admission is based primarily on academic performance: grades in core high school classes, class standing or rank where the school reports it, and the rigor of the courses taken. A strong transcript carries most of the weight. The score either supports it or stays out of the way.
USC publishes an academic profile of admitted students, and its test-optional FAQ tells families to review that profile before deciding whether to send scores. Check the current year's range there before you settle on a target. Confirm this with USC's admissions office rather than relying on any summary, ours included.

How far off is a 1080, and how long does closing that gap take?
A 1080 is 220 points short of 1300, which Carson calls a large amount of prep but not a crazy gap.
A question we hear a lot: a sophomore has a 1080 on a practice SAT and her heart set on South Carolina. How far off is she? The arithmetic is simple. The work behind it is not.
Carson's rule of thumb is about 60 hours of focused preparation to move one standard deviation, which on the SAT is roughly 200 points. A 220-point climb sits right around that mark. He describes it as a rigorous stretch, practicing constantly over a window of about two months, and he is honest that it might take more than one SAT to land the score. "A 200-point increase is phenomenal," he says, and it usually goes to the hardest workers in the room.
It has been done. Zoey, one of our students, gained 220 points in eight weeks of live evening classes, counted back from her May test date. You can read how Zoey planned her eight weeks. Her result is one student's, and it shows what that kind of window can hold.
A sophomore has something a senior does not: time. She can choose the two months that fit around her season and her hardest classes instead of cramming before an application deadline. Our guide on how many hours SAT prep takes breaks down how to spread those hours.
Does the University of South Carolina require the SAT right now?
No, USC is test-optional for the spring, summer and fall 2027 terms, for admission, the South Carolina Honors College and merit scholarships from the admissions office.
On the application, your teen answers "Yes" or "No" to having scores considered. USC's FAQ says students "will be considered fairly and equitably regardless of whether or not they submit scores," and every applicant is considered for merit scholarships either way. Some scholarships do require the separate Honors College application.
A few details trip families up:
- Scores printed on a high school transcript are not reviewed. USC reads only official scores sent by the testing agency or scores self-reported in the USC Admissions Portal.
- If your teen picks test-optional, any official scores already sent are ignored.
- The choice can be switched up to the credentials deadline for that application type.
- Official scores are required only if your teen enrolls.
Here is the catch for younger students. The policy USC has posted covers 2027 terms. A sophomore today applies for a later entry year, and the pages we checked do not say what rule will apply then. Plan as though the score could count, and check sc.edu each fall. Our article on whether to take the SAT when colleges are test-optional walks through that decision.
The misconception: test-optional means the SAT no longer matters
A score at or above USC's typical range is still evidence an applicant can choose to add, and USC itself encourages juniors and seniors to test.
Its FAQ tells the classes of 2027 and 2028 to take the SAT or ACT if their school, district or state requires it, or if outside scholarship programs ask for it. It also points out that some colleges still require scores. A teen applying to USC is rarely applying only to USC.
USC's superscore policy lowers the risk of trying. If your teen submits, USC builds a superscore from every SAT she took, regardless of when. A strong Math score in March and a strong Reading and Writing score in May can combine. A weak sitting does not have to be sent at all, because test-optional lets her leave scores off entirely.
So the honest framing is this: a 1300 gives your teen a choice. A 1080 leaves the transcript to do the work alone.
How do you time the SAT around USC's deadlines?
Work back from the credentials deadline: Nov. 1 for Early Action, Dec. 1 for the Honors College, Jan. 15 for Regular Decision.
Those are the last dates USC accepts outstanding items and the switch on whether scores are considered. Scores that arrive after the credentials deadline put the application on a space-available basis, which no family wants.
The 2026 to 2027 SAT weekend dates still ahead this school year are Nov. 7 and Dec. 5, 2026, then Mar. 6, May 1 and Jun. 5, 2027. Each one has a registration deadline that falls before test day. Our page on every SAT date and registration deadline keeps the full list.
For a sophomore with a 220-point gap, a sensible shape is a first real SAT in junior year, a two-month prep block before it, and a second date in reserve, since Carson expects a jump this size may take more than one sitting. The superscore rewards that second try.
If you want help picking those dates for your teen's calendar, book a free 15-minute call. We will look at the practice score, the target and the USC deadline together.
