No. You cannot send PSAT scores to colleges for admission, so your teen needs an official SAT or ACT score for applications. The one place the PSAT/NMSQT counts is National Merit, where it is the qualifying test for juniors.

Why can't you send PSAT scores to colleges?
Colleges ask for an official SAT or ACT score, and the PSAT was never built to be one.
Carson Flowers puts it simply in the video: the P in PSAT is for practice. It is the College Board's warm-up for the SAT, and it is scored on its own scale of 320 to 1520 instead of the SAT's 400 to 1600. That difference matters to an admissions office comparing thousands of applicants, because it needs every score on the same scale from the same kind of test. The College Board's Score Sends service exists to send SAT scores to colleges and scholarship programs. A PSAT result is a report for your family to learn from.
So the honest answer to the search is no. If your teen scored well, that is good news, and the score that goes on an application still has to come from an SAT or ACT test day.
If you want a plain read on where a PSAT score points and how big the gap is to your teen's target, our free SAT gap guide walks through it step by step.

What does a high PSAT score tell you about the SAT?
A high PSAT score is the best preview you have of the SAT, and it is a reason to book the real test soon.
A question we hear a lot: a junior scores a 1440 on the PSAT, close to National Merit territory, and the family wonders whether that score can stand in for an SAT. Or whether they waited too long to start. Carson's first reaction is congratulations. A 1440 on a PSAT, probably with no prep at all, puts a student in a fantastic position for colleges. He says he would be surprised if that student scored below 1400 on an SAT.
The two tests are close cousins, which is why one predicts the other so well. Our page on how the PSAT compares with the SAT covers the difference in difficulty, and why the PSAT tops out at 1520 explains the scale.
Nothing is guaranteed on test day, and Carson does not pretend otherwise. His advice is to sit for the SAT "just to see what happens," because a student scoring like that might surprise everyone. He says the same about the ACT. They might just score a 36. Who knows?
The misconception: a great PSAT means you can skip the SAT
A strong PSAT does not replace an SAT or ACT, even at a test-optional college.
Test-optional policies make this belief feel reasonable. If a college does not require scores, why not point to the PSAT? Carson's view is that a student applying test optional might mention it, though he does not expect it to carry much weight. Admissions offices weigh official scores, and a practice test does not qualify.
The bigger cost is the chance left on the table. A student who scored 1440 on a practice test without preparing has a real shot at an SAT score that would strengthen an application to a selective college. Applying with no score at all means the file leans on grades and essays alone. We wrote more about whether to take the SAT when colleges are test optional, and the short version matches Carson's: take the test first, then decide whether to send it.
Testing policies vary by college and can change from one year to the next. Confirm with each college's admissions office rather than relying on any summary, ours included.
How does your teen get a score colleges will accept?
Register for an SAT or ACT, practice with full-length tests, and send the official score once it arrives.
Carson's point about timing should ease your mind: a family that waited until after the PSAT has not waited too long. The student needs to sit for one official test and see whether the score holds up. The remaining 2026-27 SAT weekend dates are November 7 and December 5 in 2026, then March 6, May 1 and June 5 in 2027. Registration closes about two weeks before each one, on October 23, November 20, February 19, April 16 and May 21. If a deadline has already passed, the next date becomes the plan.
Preparation still matters for a high scorer. Carson suggests taking several full Bluebook practice tests to find the ceiling, aiming at a number like 1550 instead of settling for a repeat of the PSAT. The SAT is digital and taken in the Bluebook app, with a built-in Desmos graphing calculator available on the whole Math section. Practicing in that same setup removes surprises on test day.
After scores come out, the College Board lets students send them to colleges and scholarship programs, including schools added after test day. Many colleges superscore, which means they take the best Reading and Writing and the best Math across sittings, so a second attempt gives those schools more to choose from. Check each college's policy. If the ACT suits your teen better, our guide on choosing the ACT instead of the SAT can help you decide.

Quick answers
Can you send PSAT scores through College Board Score Sends?
No, Score Sends is the College Board's program for sending SAT scores. It delivers SAT results to colleges, scholarship organizations and other institutions. The score your teen sends should come from an SAT or ACT.
Is a 1440 PSAT score good?
Yes, Carson calls a 1440 PSAT a fantastic score. He says a student at that level, especially one who did not prep, is in a strong position and would likely score at least 1400 on an SAT. The next step is booking the official test.
What is the highest PSAT score?
The highest PSAT/NMSQT score is 1520. The test is scored from 320 to 1520, while the SAT runs from 400 to 1600.
Does the PSAT count for anything?
Yes, the PSAT/NMSQT is the National Merit qualifying test for juniors. It also gives your family an early read on SAT readiness, even though colleges do not use it for admission.
Can the ACT replace the SAT on a college application?
Yes, Carson's advice is to take an SAT or an ACT, since either one gives colleges an official score. Check each college's testing policy before your teen picks a test.
