What SAT score do you need to play football at UCF?

There is no SAT score that guarantees a football spot at UCF, and UCF sets no minimum SAT for admission. A strong score still matters: the middle 50% of admitted UCF freshmen in fall 2026 scored 1310 to 1420, and a recruit or walk-on near that range gives coaches one more reason to take a chance on him.

Does UCF football care about SAT scores?

It depends on how badly the coaches want the player, and for most recruits outside the top tier, the scores count for more than families expect.

A question we hear a lot: a junior holds two D2 football offers, he wants a D1 offer, and the school he dreams about is UCF, but his SAT is low. Does the score matter if he can play?

Carson's answer starts with honesty. If a player is a five-star recruit, a coaching staff may barely look at his test scores. If he is weighing D2 offers and still waiting on D1 interest, he is probably not in that group, and that is exactly where grades and scores start doing work on his behalf.

Carson knows this from the other side of the table. He describes himself as a horrible football player who was still recruited by one school, and he is confident it happened because he had a very good SAT and a very good GPA. The lesson he draws is simple: the better the scores and grades, the more schools will look at a player at all.

If your son is in this spot and you want to know whether his current score gives him a real shot, Carson offers a free 15-minute call to look at his numbers and his timeline with you.

What SAT score does a UCF walk-on need?

A walk-on generally has to be admitted to UCF the same way any student is, so the score that matters is the one UCF admissions sees: aim for the 1310 to 1420 range.

UCF says plainly that it has no minimum SAT, ACT or CLT score. It also requires every freshman applicant to send an official SAT or ACT score (CLT is accepted too), and it superscores both tests, which means it takes his best section scores across all his sittings. UCF encourages students to test more than once.

In the video, Carson rounds UCF's average to about 1350. The university's own 2026 profile puts the average admitted freshman at 1368, with the middle half between 1310 and 1420. As Carson puts it, UCF is not a safety school anymore. With about 40.9% of applicants admitted, a 1100 is a long way from the typical admit, even with a good transcript. Our full breakdown of what UCF admits and what your teen needs covers the GPA side in more detail.

Timing matters as much as the number. For Summer and Fall 2027, UCF's Early Action materials deadline is November 15, and official test scores must arrive by then. Students who meet every Early Action deadline also get priority for merit scholarships, which UCF says usually run out by mid-January.

Walk-on tryout rules are set by the football program, not admissions. Confirm the current process with UCF Athletics and the admissions office rather than relying on any summary, ours included.

How a higher SAT helps a D2 recruit aim for a D1 school

A higher score widens the list of programs willing to take a look, and at a D1 school like UCF it can be the tiebreaker for a roster spot.

Carson's reasoning goes like this. A D1 program is filling more than its starting lineup. It also needs players for what he calls the practice squad, and for those spots a coach may pick the athlete with strong test scores and grades. That player raises the team's average SAT and GPA a little, he is a contributing member of the campus even if football does not work out, and it probably helps the coach too.

Getting on the roster is the foot in the door. From there, Carson points out, a player has a shot to work his way off the practice squad and onto the field. A low score can close that door before a coach ever watches film.

NCAA academic eligibility is a separate set of rules from UCF admission, and we do not cover those requirements here. Our guide to what SAT score recruited athletes need explains how test scores fit into recruiting more broadly.

The misconception: good athletes don't need test scores

Only the most sought-after players can ignore their scores; for everyone else, the SAT is part of the recruiting pitch.

Many families assume that if a coach wants their son, admissions will sort itself out. That can be true for a handful of elite recruits. For a player with two D2 offers who is hoping to move up, the opposite is closer to the truth: his grades and scores are one of the few parts of his profile he can still improve between now and signing day.

There is also a plan B built into a good score. If he enrolls at UCF as a regular student and walks on, he is not on an athletic scholarship. In Florida, the same SAT work can earn Bright Futures, which pays per credit hour at public universities like UCF. For the class of 2027 and earlier, a 1330 SAT meets the Academic Scholars (FAS) test line for 100% of tuition and applicable fees, and a 1190 meets the Medallion (FMS) line for 75%. For the class of 2028 and later, those lines are 1350 and 1200. GPA and service hour requirements apply as well, and scores must come from tests taken by August 31 of the graduation year.

How to raise an SAT score during football season

Football players raise their scores the same way other students do, with short, regular sessions built around practice instead of competing with it.

Jonathan, a homeschooled 10th grader in Florida, went from a 1020 to a 1220 in eight weeks with 1-on-1 tutoring from Carson. His sessions were scheduled before football practice and games. You can read how Jonathan fit prep around football, and our guide to SAT prep during a varsity season lays out schedules other athletes have used.

A few practical points for a UCF hopeful:

  • Count back from November 15 of senior year. UCF needs official scores by that date for Early Action, so the fall SAT dates of senior year are the last comfortable chances.
  • Every Florida district gives juniors a college entrance exam on a school day, as state law requires. Treat it as a real attempt, since UCF superscores.
  • Because UCF uses his best Reading and Writing score and his best Math score, a retake can raise one section without risking the other.

If UCF is the goal and the current score is short, a 15-minute conversation with Carson can map out which test dates fit his football calendar and how far he needs to climb. It is free, and you will leave with a plan whether or not you work with us.

Quick answers

What SAT score do you need to get into UCF?

UCF has no minimum SAT score. The middle 50% of admitted freshmen in fall 2026 scored 1310 to 1420, with an average of 1368.

Is UCF hard to get into?

Yes, more than many families expect. UCF admitted about 40.9% of applicants, and its admitted freshmen had a middle 50% GPA of 4.11 to 4.57.

Can I get into UCF with a 1230 SAT?

It is possible, since UCF sets no minimum, but a 1230 sits below the middle 50% range of 1310 to 1420. A strong GPA and rigorous courses would need to carry more of the application, and a retake is worth considering because UCF superscores.

What are the deadlines for UCF applications?

For Summer and Fall 2027, the Early Action materials deadline is November 15, including official test scores. Students who miss it are reviewed starting in early January on a modified rolling basis.

Does UCF superscore the SAT?

Yes. UCF superscores both the SAT and the ACT and encourages students to take the test more than once.
