What the section actually tests

• Grammar and punctuation: a finite set of rules the test reuses constantly.
• Evidence and inference: choosing the answer the passage supports, not the one that sounds smart.
• Words in context: what the word means in this sentence, not in the dictionary.
• Transitions and rhetorical synthesis: how ideas connect and what a sentence is for.

Rules first, speed second

The grammar rules on this test can be listed, learned and drilled. Once the rules are automatic, timing improves on its own, because your teen stops re-reading and starts recognizing. We train it in that order on purpose.

The reading habit myth

Parents are often told their teen must become a reader before this score can move. A reading habit is genuinely valuable long term, and we recommend building one early. But the digital SAT uses short passages and repeatable question types, and the section responds to trained mechanics in weeks, not years. Do not wait for a personality change to start.
