The misconception: test optional means the SAT does not matter in Connecticut

Wesleyan, Trinity, Quinnipiac and UConn are test optional for fall 2027, so many families assume the score is irrelevant. The ranges above come from the students who chose to send one, and they sit well above the overall class. Yale and Southern CSU still require a score. A strong score is one more reason for a school to say yes, and a weak one can simply stay home.

Quick answers

What SAT score do you need for Connecticut's Roberta B. Willis Scholarship?

1200 is the SAT threshold, but it is not a standalone cutoff that pays out. A student qualifies for the merit track with a 1200 SAT (or 25 ACT) or a top-20th-percentile class rank, and then the award itself is need-based, set by a federal Student Aid Index cutoff, and capped at $5,250 a year for a four-year program. There is no large automatic payout for a high score alone.

Does UConn require the SAT for admission?

No. UConn is test-optional, and its admissions office states that submitting SAT or ACT scores is not required even to be considered for merit scholarships. For the fall 2024 enrolled class, students who did submit scores had an SAT composite between 1220 and 1420 (25th to 75th percentile).

Is the SAT given free at school in Connecticut?

Yes. State law requires every Connecticut public high school junior to take the Connecticut SAT School Day, given free during the school day. The scores also feed state and district accountability reporting.

What SAT score does Yale expect?

Yale is highly selective and now requires test scores. For the fall 2024 enrolled class, the middle 50% SAT composite was 1480 to 1560, and 88% of score-submitters scored between 1400 and 1600. Yale admitted about 3.9% of its 57,517 applicants that cycle.

Do Connecticut's four state universities (CCSU, SCSU, ECSU, WCSU) require the SAT?

No, none of the four Connecticut State Universities require SAT or ACT scores for admission, and Southern Connecticut State University does not consider scores at all, even if submitted. Central, Eastern and Western all list test scores as 'considered if submitted' alongside GPA and class rank.

Are these ranges cutoffs?

No. A middle 50% describes the central half of the reported group, not an admission cutoff. Some rows describe enrolled students or score submitters only, as labeled. A position within a range does not guarantee admission or merit aid.
