Kira, a Plant High School sophomore in Tampa, raised her SAT from a 1270 to a 1400 in ten weeks with Florida Test Prep while swimming and playing water polo five days a week. A diagnostic found she was losing points to timing, not knowledge. Fixing that carried her past the 1330 Florida Academic Scholars line with 70 points to spare, the Bright Futures tier that pays 100% of tuition at Florida's public universities, and moved her inside FSU's admitted range a year early.

Where Kira started
A 1270 is the score that stalls families. It is good enough to feel done and not good enough to do the two things her parents cared about. It sat 60 points short of the 1330 Florida Academic Scholars line, and below the admitted-range floors at USF and UCF.
The gap was not knowledge. As her dad puts it, "you can have the knowledge but not know how to really approach the test." Kira's version is more specific: "before we started talking about strategies it was kind of just me doing it all on paper and trying to rush through it, and my timing wasn't very good, so I would miss a bunch of questions." A recommendation from Kira's teacher brought the family to us.

The diagnostic, and what it found
Week one was a full-length baseline practice SAT under real timing, graded question by question. Kira's 1270 was not spread evenly across the test. Almost all of the missing points had one address, and it was not a topic she had never seen.

What Kira drilled, week by week
With the leaks named, the sessions went only there. No front-to-back workbook, no re-teaching what she already knew. Sessions were scheduled around swim and water polo, at home or in person, whichever fit the week.

Rehearsal, then test day
The last two weeks were full-length practice tests under test conditions, each one reviewed, until the pacing that had cost her the 1270 was automatic. Test day was not the first time she had run the whole thing at speed. It was the fifth. She sat the real SAT a full year earlier than most of her class.

The result, and what it unlocked
Ten weeks after the baseline, Kira scored a 1400, and the section she feared carried its weight. Between 1270 and 1400 sit four thresholds: USF's admitted floor (1290), UCF's (1310), the 1330 Florida Academic Scholars line, and FSU's floor (1380). She crossed all four.
She also took the test "a whole year early," in her dad's words, which "just opens up options in terms of what to focus on, and maybe removes some of the worry that you have." The scholarship question the family started with is settled, with a year of high school still to run.

What Kira's score says about the mid-1200s plateau
A student stuck in the mid-1200s usually has a testing problem, not a knowledge problem, and that is the most fixable kind. Kira gained 130 points in ten weeks, almost entirely from pacing and strategy, and the diagnostic is what made that possible: it said exactly where the points were, so none of the ten weeks went to material she already had. Her gain came in under our program average, and we publish it anyway, because where those 130 points landed matters more than their count.
The misconception: a 1270 is good enough to stop
A 1270 beats most test takers nationally, so families call it a day. In Florida, the retake decision at 1270 is not really an admissions decision. It is a scholarship decision. Sixty more points reaches the tier that pays 100% of tuition at every public university in the state, and the same climb happens to carry a student past the USF and UCF admitted floors. Nationally, a 1270 is a fine score. In Florida, it is 60 points from the most expensive place to stop.

In Florida, usually yes. A 1270 is 60 points from the 1330 Florida Academic Scholars line and just under the USF and UCF admitted floors. Kira retook from exactly that position and landed a 1400 after ten weeks of prep. Bright Futures superscores across sittings, so a retake can only help the qualifying score, never hurt it.
What SAT score earns 100% Bright Futures?
A 1330, using your best Reading and Writing plus best Math across sittings, meets the Florida Academic Scholars test-score requirement. FAS pays 100% of tuition and applicable fees at Florida publics. The score is one requirement alongside GPA, coursework, and service hours. Heads up for younger students: for the class of 2028 and later, the state raises the lines to 1350 for Academic Scholars and 1200 for Medallion (ACT 25 for Medallion, CLT 96/83).
Can a student do SAT prep during a sports season?
Kira prepped while swimming for Plant High and playing water polo five days a week. Her sessions were scheduled around practice, at home or in person, whichever fit the week. In her words: "you guys were pretty good with working on which days are you most available. It's pretty flexible based on whatever people need."

Interviewer: So what were you first worried about before starting SAT prep?
Kira's dad: My main thing for her was to really have some structure when studying for the test, having kind of an ability to go through all the different steps and learn the process. Because you can have the knowledge but not know how to really approach the test. Sometimes that hurts you, and I think that was the main thing.
Interviewer: Was there a target score for Kira?
Kira's dad: The main goal for us, my wife and I, would be really just that she would qualify for Bright Futures. I think we didn't really discuss it. I think she's got higher goals for herself than what we set for her. But you know, testing is individual, right? You can be a very good student, but she's not really great at testing. And sometimes that's what you need. You need a little push, kind of getting past that.
Interviewer: Is there anything that made you hesitate with working with us specifically for tutoring?
Kira's dad: Not really. I mean, I think you guys have been very professional. It was a recommendation by Kira's teacher that really made it an easy decision for us. Yeah, no, I mean, I think it was great because it was very structured. It was laid out perfectly in terms of what the expectations were to participate in the program, so no hesitation really.
Interviewer: What felt the hardest about the SAT before we got started?
Kira: I'd definitely say the math, because before we started talking about strategies it was kind of just me doing it all on paper and trying to rush through it, and then my timing wasn't very good, so I would miss a bunch of questions. Which I then learned, like, easy points that I could get with, like, specific methods.
Interviewer: What didn't you believe would happen when you got started?
Kira: Again, I definitely didn't think I would do as well on the math, just because I've always done better on the reading, like in the past PSATs. Also those longer questions. Usually I wasn't able to understand them really, because it would be like a very dense paragraph. But after the tutoring, it was like I could kind of block out the certain things that I didn't need to look at. And it was more so like, this is what you should be looking for, and this is how you can get your answer quicker.
Interviewer: Was there anything that happened in the first few weeks that convinced you it was working?
Kira: I think it was probably when we did one of the practice SATs. It would have been like the second one, where, after we had started learning some of the strategies after the baseline, I kind of got through it faster and it didn't feel as hard, or as a normal standardized test would.
Kira's dad: Having conversations with her and how she was feeling about the course and the progression, I think it made it even more convincing that this was going to work well.
Interviewer: So after the fact, what were the positives after receiving that score?
Kira's dad: Just having the confidence that she'll be okay, in terms of, like, one thing out of the way, right? And she took the test early, a whole year early. So it just opens up options in terms of what to focus on, and maybe removes some of the worry that you have.
Interviewer: What sports and clubs are you a part of, and what made this tutoring doable while participating in them?
Kira: So I'm on the high school swim team, but as I was doing the tutoring I was playing water polo five days a week. What made me playing sports and also having the tutoring at the same time doable: you guys were pretty good with working on, like, which days are you most available, and would you prefer to do it from home, or would you rather come in. It's pretty flexible based on whatever people need.
Interviewer: What would you tell a friend about us?
Kira: I'd say the program is really good, especially for understanding those, like, tricks on how to do the SAT. Because I feel like, from what I've heard about some, like, other tutoring, they will, like, sit you down and they'll make you, especially on the math, work out all the problems and tell you this is how to get the right answer. Whereas with you guys, I have to tell, like, my friends, like, oh, there's not enough time for that. I'd say it really helped me with my timing especially, and I think that was, like, I felt super, like, quick with everything once I took the SAT after the program.
Interviewer: Is there anything else that we did well that you want to share with other students?
Kira: It was really interactive. It wasn't just, okay, this is the question, this is the right answer, now let's move on. It was more, like, getting us involved and kind of holding us, like, accountable for the answers, and if we got it wrong, we'd discuss it. And it's kind of like getting to the root of, like, why something was happening. And also, like, instead of being like a robot and being like, okay, SAT, and then go, like, you also were pretty good at, like, getting to know us on, like, a personal level, which made it probably more enjoyable than, like, other SAT courses would be.
Interviewer: What would you tell a parent who's on the fence about us?
Kira's dad: There's lots of different options, obviously. There's different companies that exist that do this. From professionalism and convenience, I think this is a great course and I would recommend it.
Interviewer: Is there anything else that we did well that you wanted to tell me or other parents?
Kira's dad: I think you kept in touch and communicated with me throughout the process, to kind of lay out what the expected situation was for, you know, when the next class would be, when she's going to take the exam, and whether she's ready to take the exam. I think I may have asked you throughout the program if she's ready, if she's doing well, and if she's on target, and you confirmed, you know, throughout the process. So I think that really helped.
