What Is Bright Futures Worth? The Dollar Math

Florida Academic Scholars covers 100% of tuition and applicable fees at a Florida public university, and Florida Medallion Scholars covers 75%. At 2026-27 rates that works out to roughly $25,500 to $25,700 across a 120 hour bachelor's degree for Academic Scholars, and roughly $19,100 to $19,300 for Medallion.

Most pages will not give you that number. The reason is that Bright Futures does not pay a set dollar amount for Academic Scholars or Medallion Scholars. It pays a percentage of what your teen's school charges, so the value depends on the campus and on the year. You can still get to a real figure, and this page does the arithmetic with each university's own published 2026-27 rate.

What each award pays per credit hour

The Bright Futures Student Handbook is specific about what the award touches. Academic Scholars receive an award covering 100% of tuition and applicable fees at a public institution. Medallion Scholars receive 75%. The handbook then names the fees that count:

"The applicable fees for both FAS and FMS recipients include the activity and service fee, health fee, athletic fee, financial aid fee, capital improvement fee, campus access/transportation fee, technology fee, and tuition differential fee."

That list matters more than it looks. Florida sets undergraduate resident tuition at $105.07 per credit hour statewide, so tuition alone is identical at every public university in the state. The fees are what create the spread between campuses, and the tuition differential is the biggest of them. At UF it runs $44.17 per credit hour and at FSU it runs $49.59, which is why FSU's sticker rate is a little higher than UF's even though the tuition line is the same.

Here is the 2026-27 Florida resident undergraduate rate at each of the three schools most Florida families are asking about, and what each award pays against it.

All figures are approximate and come from each university's own published 2026-27 Florida resident undergraduate schedule. FSU's eligible portion sits below its sticker rate because FSU charges a Student Facility Use Fee of $2.00 per credit hour plus $20.00 per semester, and that fee is not on the state's applicable list. FSU says so plainly on its own financial aid page: there is no Bright Futures award that covers 100% of tuition and fees at Florida State.

The four year total at UF, FSU, and UCF

A Florida bachelor's degree is normally 120 semester hours, and 120 hours is also the Bright Futures funding cap. Multiply the per hour award by 120 and you have the lifetime value of the scholarship, assuming your teen finishes on time and rates hold where they sit today.

These are approximate 2026-27 projections, not a quote. Tuition and fees are set each year by the Legislature and by each board of trustees, so a freshman starting in 2026 will see the later years drift. The questions Florida parents actually ask

Does Bright Futures cover room and board?

No. The award covers tuition and applicable fees, and nothing else. Housing, meals, books, and transportation are all outside it, and that gap is larger than most families expect going in.

UF publishes an estimated in-state undergraduate budget of $25,830 for 2026-27, of which $6,440 is tuition and fees. A full Academic Scholars award lands squarely on that $6,440 line. The other $19,390 or so is still yours. Say it out loud at the kitchen table, because "she got Bright Futures, so college is paid for" is an expensive thing to believe.

What score does my teen need to hit each award?

It depends on the graduating class, and the line moved. Anyone graduating in 2027 or earlier is on the old thresholds. Anyone graduating in 2028 or later is on the higher ones.

A test score by itself is not enough for either award. Both also require a Florida standard high school diploma, the 16 college preparatory course credits, a weighted Bright Futures GPA of 3.50 for FAS or 3.00 for FMS, and service or paid work hours. Do we have to apply, or does it happen automatically?

You have to apply, and the window is senior year only. The Florida Financial Aid Application, the FFAA, opens October 1 of senior year and closes August 31 of the graduation year. For the class of 2027 that is October 1, 2026 through August 31, 2027.

The handbook is blunt about missing it. A student who does not apply by the deadline cannot receive the scholarship, whatever the score or the GPA. It takes a few minutes. Do it in October and stop thinking about it.

Can they lose it once they have it?

Yes. Renewal runs on college GPA. Academic Scholars have to hold a 3.0 cumulative college GPA, unrounded and unweighted. Medallion Scholars have to hold a 2.75. Students also have to earn a set number of credit hours each term based on how they enrolled.

Falling short does not always mean losing everything. UF's financial aid office publishes the demotion rule in writing: an Academic Scholar who finishes with a 2.75 to 2.99 renews as a Medallion Scholar instead. The funding also runs a hard maximum of 120 semester hours and five years from high school graduation.

What if my teen starts at a Florida state college instead?

Medallion is worth 100% there, not 75%. A Medallion Scholar enrolled in an associate degree program at a Florida College System institution receives an award covering the full cost of tuition and applicable fees. The 75% figure applies once they move on to a university.

The raw dollars are still smaller, because state college tuition is lower to begin with. For a family whose teen landed on Medallion, those first two years are the cheapest stretch of the degree.

The misconception: "Bright Futures pays a flat rate per credit hour"

Search for a Bright Futures dollar amount and you will find pages quoting a fixed per hour figure for Academic Scholars or Medallion Scholars, usually with no year attached. Those numbers are either stale or they belong to a different award.

Flat per hour amounts do exist in the program. They apply to the Gold Seal Vocational and Gold Seal CAPE awards, which for 2026-27 pay $39 per semester hour for a career certificate program and $48 per semester hour for a technical degree program. Those are real published rates. They are not the FAS or FMS rate, and copying them across is how a family ends up budgeting a few thousand dollars short.

One genuine per hour add on does exist. The highest ranked Academic Scholar in each Florida district is named an Academic Top Scholar and receives an extra $44 per semester hour for fall and spring, ranked on the product of the Bright Futures weighted GPA and the best entrance exam score. That is one student per district, so plan around the base award.

What the difference between 1190 and 1330 is worth

This is the number almost nobody publishes. A student who earns Medallion gets 75% of tuition and applicable fees. A student who clears the Academic Scholars line gets 100%. The gap is that other 25%, and across a 120 hour degree it lands in nearly the same place at all three schools.

Call it roughly $6,400 either way, using approximate 2026-27 rates. For a student graduating in 2027 or earlier, that $6,400 sits behind 140 SAT points, the distance from the 1190 Medallion line to the 1330 Academic Scholars line. Every one of those points is worth about $46. For the class of 2028 and beyond the climb is 150 points, from 1200 to 1350, at roughly $43 a point.

Framed that way, a single test date is one of the higher leverage mornings on a Florida teenager's calendar. It is also worth remembering that the same score is doing double duty.
